Fayette Resources Launches New Healthy Living Program During Mental Health / Mental Retardation Awareness Month
3.3.2009 - Lemont Furnace, PA — Statewide, and across the nation, organizations devoted to serving individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities (MH/MR) are planning special events in March to raise public awareness of the many abilities people have, regardless of their disabilities. This is all a part of a year-round effort to encourage people to bring diversity to their community by welcoming people with disabilities into their neighborhoods, workplaces, houses of worship and schools.
“We see Mental Retardation Awareness Month as an opportunity for the public to better understand the individuals we serve,” said Kathy Susano-Morris, President and CEO of Fayette Resources.
In conjunction with Awareness Month, Fayette Resources is proud to launch their Healthy Living Program funded by a grant from the Eberly Foundation. Stacey Beistel, Fayette Resources Program Specialist, worked extensively to create a “Biggest Loser-inspired” initiative that will help to promote healthy choices and nutrition awareness for individuals in the Fayette Resources family. The lifestyle programs will primarily focus on diet and regular exercise and the individuals can participate in Fayette's own version of “The Biggest Loser” where they will learn about healthy choices and strive to maintain a healthy weight, all while having fun. The local Healthcare Quality Unit (HCQU) will assist in implementing training programs that focus on exercise and weight management through walking, low-impact aerobics and dance.
Kathy Susano-Morris is extremely proud of her team and the work that went into winning this
grant that will be used to create the Healthy Living Program. “Fayette Resources is thrilled to be recognized and supported by the Eberly Foundation in our efforts to improve the health and well-being of the individuals in our community programs,” says Morris. “This is a wonderful kick-off for Mental Retardation Awareness Month and will offer the individuals an array of life changing experiences. We extend a most grateful ‘thank you’ to the Eberly Foundation for Acknowledging the needs of our community.”
