Community Forum - "Making sense of "Autism"- Facts vs. Myths"
October 8, 15, 22, 2009
There exists so much confusion about "what autism is" and "what to do" that best serves the child or adult with that diagnosis. This presentation intends to contrast scientific facts vs. myths and misunderstandings, best practices vs. fads and foolishness. Although the focus is on "autism", this presentation will also address other challenging behavioral and learning issues.

Information about Autism:
Fayette Resources has provided high quality, caring services to individuals of varying levels and virtually every category of disability, including medical, psychological, learning, and behavioral challenges.
Our long history of truly individualized programming and supports, combined with a commitment to the individuals and families it serves, has earned it a reputation for perseverance under all circumstances.
Fayette Resources' approach to providing services to individuals diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorders is based upon many years of extensive research-based evidence and practices, the most current literature drawn from Applied Behavior Analysis, Positive Behavioral Support practices and ongoing date-based decision making. As with all of our individuals, we employ only those methods that work effectively while guaranteeing the individual's dignity, rights, and personal welfare.
Because we are committed to personally and effectively supporting the individuals we serve, Fayette Resources is also fully committed to supporting all staff working with them. Our Staff members receive continuous, current training through our in-house Program Assistance Team and consultants. For those serving individuals with more severe diagnoses, Fayette Resources has designed a Specialized Worker Program to give the staff more intensive technical support. Much of our training is provided by a professor from the Special Education Department of California University of Pennsylvania, which itself offers a certificate program in Autistic Spectrum Disorders. This training contributes to staff retention and results in greater consistency and deeper, more enduring relationships with individuals and their families. No matter what issues individuals or families may face, Fayette Resources will provide whatever support and services are necessary to ensure their success.
